The Importance of Changing Air Filters

Changing air filter(s) in a home heating system or air conditioning system may be the single most important task that the average homeowner may overlook but can perform on their own. When air filters plug up with dust, air flow is restricted through the furnace or air conditioner, causing immediate operational issues. In a forced air heating system, when air flow is restricted, temperatures of the heat exchanger can rise enough to reach overheat conditions. Over time, these conditions cause unit life expectancies to decrease, cracks in heat exchangers, and the increase in fuel usage. In air conditioning, when air flow is restricted, coil temperatures drop too low causing the coil to freeze up, liquid refrigerant does not boil off in the evaporator, liquid returns to the compressor and causes premature compressor failure. Most homeowners may not be aware how important checking and/or changing filters is. The best procedure to follow is: check your air filters once a month while the system is running, whether in heating or cooling modes. If there is noticeable buildup of dust, they should be replaced. The time of replacement will depend on environment conditions and  the average replacement time will be every three months. Replacing air filters should be an easy task. For help finding and replacing your own air filters, ask your HVAC repair technician the next time he/she is in your home to perform the annual tune-up and inspection. They should be happy to show you how to check and replace your air filters.
